I am trying to lease a Volvo XC90 from an out of state dealer (autonation). We agreed on the price/terms but now at the last second they are stating I have to pay the registration at my states DMV office. Does this sound right? I purchased a vehicle from a different autonation dealer last year and didn’t have to pay anything extra when I went to the DMV. In MI if this helps. Any insight would be appreciated.
It can go either way. Some dealers will collect registration and some don’t. If they don’t, it’s not a big deal to pay those fees along with tax when the car is registered at your local DMV.
Dealer dependent. If they don’t want to do it, you can definitely take the appropriate documents down to your dmv and do it.
As far as the financials of deal go, if you don’t want to pay for it yourself, get a reg estimate on your dmv’s website for your new car. Then screen shot it, send it to dealer, and say that you thought the reg cost was part of your deal and that you’re not paying it. Then ask them to include a line item on the deal sheet for the reg cost as a “check back to customer” to cover the cost
It seems like they are adding tax to the monthly payment as well. Is that not right?
They would have to apply your local taxes, yes. Your taxes are going to -> BMW -> then to State/Local taxes
You should have negotiated tax when you negotiated your payments. If you wanted that included in whatever #’s you agreed to, you should have said so. It’s not unusual for dealers to just be negotiating the pre tax payment.
Again, you can say to the dealer you thought that your payment already had your states tax rolled in and that’s all you’ll agree to. See what they do. Sounds like you went into negotiating under prepared. But always fixable depending whether you want to spend more, renegotiate, or walk from the deal
If it were me, I’d walk from this deal based on the drive offs alone

I’m also from the Midwest - didn’t have much luck with brokers on my XC60 so I studied up and negotiated my own lease. That’s an option but you gotta do your homework.

I may have missed it but I’m not seeing the two states in question. Which state are you buying from and which state is the car going to?

Ran into same thing recently. It’s a couple hundred bucks. I had a .006 deal so wasn’t worth the headache to walk away.
Is it worth the headache for you to renegotiate if the payment is competitive?

I was in MI and leased a car from CA last year. It was an Autonation dealer. I was told the car must be shipped to MI to avoid CA registration. And that was what I did.
