Really want a Volvo XC90, but should I wait for 2022 to come out? What other 3 row SUVs should I consider?

Got a 3rd row in the Tiguan. Only used it twice in 26 months. But it was handy. 1 infant rear facing, 1 toddler convertible rear facing, my mother was in town so my wife sat in the third row. It was fine for a 20ish min trip. Though ultimately it was easier to climb into from the trunk, lol.

For under $1k, i like the GLE best. It sits high enough and large screen is futuristic. Though my heart is on Range Rover which is also due for a redesign .

Roomiest third rows will be in Sub/YukonXL/Expedition Max/etc… but those also have some of the highest floors

The current xc90 is much larger, and while the 3rd row isn’t huge, it’s plenty usable.

Wow, same. Let me know what you end up doing.

we went xc90 to sienna, and once the trips were a bit bigger, to the suburbans and now expedition max. higher, yes, but roomy and no complaints.

I assume you meant kids?

Yeah kids have no problem climbing into tall SUVs, and that’s great for kids who are mature enough to buckle themselves in. It’s the grandparents who struggle. And parents of younger kids who still need to climb in and harness them. So it’s not the best solution for the OP for the next 5 or so years

Your wife or mother?

Wife! Mother sat in the passenger front seat.

I hope the car market cools down somewhat by the time 2022 model came out. Otherwise, price difference would be significant. Look at mdx22 vs 20. Rather than car refresh/design cycle, I would look at the specific upgrade that come with the new cycle. It’s not uncommon for the new model to come or miss features that are deal breaker. To me, some current models more than suffice, while some are just super outdated. Xc90 is the former. Still feel fresh and most reviews you’ll find on YouTube would consider it decent despite its age. Mdx2020 is on the opposite spectrum, hence justifying paying up for 2022 model (if it was money)

I thought I was joking, egg on my face!

Sing ‘I drive a backdoor van’ to the Doors tune. Wife wanted a Tig, too…but I was able to steer her towards the 4xE, entry ramp averted for now.

That step ladder ramp thing looks pretty handy! The wife just climbed in but that seems very convenient.

Sorry OP… Sienna, Odyssey, Pacifica… Carnival? It’ll just make life so much easier for the first few years. Then move to a large SUV if you have to.

Even with auto running boards or folding stairs, getting in/out of a large 3rd row SUV will be a PITA. Nothing beats a minivan for space, accessibility and functionality (and low floorboards). Tough choice… GLWT!

I’ve had an XC90 for a little over 3 years now. We have 3 kids and a very large (150lb) dog. We NEVER use the 3rd row. BUT I purely like the extra roomy cargo with the 3rd row folded. It’s nearly unusable as actual seating unless for a tiny child but then you are left with a very small cargo space. I would also not do captains chairs for middle row. You will get far more use out of a bench 2nd row than captains. I would imagine elderly parents would sit in the front passenger seat or middle row and you or your wife would be the ones crawling into the back. Either way - I imagine this is a scenario that is not too frequent?

How about hacking a 399 ‘21 XC90 when they release the ‘22 XC90?
