Random Tax on Lease

,

I registered 2 vehicles in Cook County about 5 months ago. Leased the cars from a trusted dealer, made sure that all paperwork (and taxes) were in line, and have been paying monthly since lease start with no problem.

This month I received a charge of several hundred dollars on each lease. The dealer told me Cook County has decided to place an additional property tax on each of the leases.

Does anyone have any experience with this? Anything to do in this case?

Quickly dug this up:

Does this seem like it would apply to you?

Yup - there is a personal use tax in C(r)ook county!! I got a few quotes from dealers and the payments were ~9% more due to this tax. Having said that, if you had registered the car outside of cook county, then the dealer wouldn’t have to include the cook county use tax. But if you registered the car later, the charge would be correct.

One more thing, if you’re in the city and plan to park outside a lot, you will also need to get a city sticker, else you’ll see tickets piling up real quick. Look into that.

Are you in Chicago?

Thank you everyone for your replies. Looks to be a 1% (of car’s MSRP) personal use tax. Dealer made an error and didnt charge up front I’m guessing, and will be taking it up with them.
