@HersheySweet how did you set that up?
This was a while ago, before COVID.
ohok thanks, i looked the other day and the prices are basically - get rid of cable
Visible was vile in the NorCal area. When in nyc, on one block it was great and then the rest of the time it was so slow I couldn’t wait to cancel. If anyone does it, they should google the Reddit visible party thread and join via that to always get 25/month.
Just to update this old dead thread.
US Mobile
I switched from Visible to US Mobile Recently. $45/month includes 100GB of 5gUW and 50Gb Hotspot as well as $5/off per additional line, so a pack of 4 is $30 each.
After 3 lines you get a free ‘Perk’ such as Apple Music, Spotify , etc (There’s a slew of choices)
Uses Verizon OR TMobile, you get a different sim and it resets your account time (I think) so change during the End of the pay period
Pros:
- So far I’m getting 400m on SpeedTest in a place where I used to be throttled. (This is actually higher than my home connection)
- I have not found any throttled locations on Verizon so far though my lowest was 40m (Throttled Verizon with Visible was 400k)
- eSim setup was fast and easy.
- I actually get 5gUW now, Visible never showed the Icon and USMobile does.
Cons
- My 4th port is going pretty bad, Visible released the number but USMobile hasn’t picked it up yet, 24 hours later still waiting.
I’m switching from Verizon to (either directly or via a MVNO) AT&T or T-Mobile.
I haven’t shopped for a personal plan in eons.
Before I go any further, is there a litmus test for determining if it makes more sense to choose a pre- or post-paid plan?
The post-paid ones look more expensive primarily because they include the monthly cost of renting a phone for a couple of years before you get a “free” upgrade and the luxury of renting your next phone from the same carrier.
Yeah it’s basically the “free” phone math but some discount carriers do it too with older phones. For instance got a new iPhone 13 to prepay a year of visible plus (essentially Verizon)
TM coverage is way better than ATT in my experience
I switched over last year to Helium mobile, $20/line. No issues so far. Verizon was just getting unreasonably expensive. If need a referral code, let me know.
Have you used it outside the US?
Among my considerations for a plan are international coverage and costs (primarily data)… between 15 and 30 days a year.
(I had a much longer post written summarizing my needs and requirements, but deleted it so I could first get an answer to my initial binary question).
Yes. Worked well in Europe (Czech, Austria and Italy) no issues. They have a $15 International roaming plan
For domestic, I’m using Visible, which primarily runs over Verizon networks. Ultrawideband support has been a disaster but otherwise it’s been solid.
For international, I’m using the Dent app. It’s prepaid and you can buy/sell plans on an open marketplace. You can pick-up some great deals, sometimes people just want to dump excess minutes/data.
They both support esim, so I just switch back and forth.
T-mobile include unlimited text and data up to 5(?) gb then slower speeds at no additional cost.
Before I posted today I’d come up with this as my best option (feedback welcome).
Mint Mobile prepaid / 20 GB (current month usage is 11 GB with 6 days left in the cycle)
Prepay 3 months at the intro rate of $25 a month.
I’ll be in Spain and France for ~10 days in March, and I’ll try this out:
(I have a reliable hotspot as a backup for international data / can use WhatsApp for voice if needed).
And then if this all works out, I’ll prepay Mint Mobile for a longer term (like 12 months unlimited for $25/month).
And if this doesn’t pan out, I’ll look for something better.

Runner-up was AT&T prepaid 12-month plan for $300, but international plans are $12 a day.
I also don’t want to commit to a term that long until I’m certain that there’s reliable coverage where my Verizon service is currently worthless.
How many phones do you have on your plan?
Just mine.
I am an avid phone hacker, currently on the $15 unlimited plan from Total.
Anyone looking should look at the Total BYOD deal it’s $25 or $30/mo. Includes free Disney + and Hulu is only $4 more to add on.
Total is crap customer service, but you don’t need them after set up.
Chase routinely runs $15 cash back on total billing.
Total has higher network priority than Us Mobile and Visible (which is also owned by VZW).
I have tested every MVNO out there, Total is by far the best. They also give you $100 off any phone, including iPhones, after 6mo of service or $200 after 1 year.
Visible+ is lower priority (in usage, though they claim they are prioritized) but has free Apple watch. Total does not support apple watches.
If you have never dabbled in capital one shopping then you should (don’t need to be a capital one member). They have 30% cash back on all phones. Upgraded my family to iPhone 16s on that offer. When bought through total. Phones unlock after 60 days
You can use my referral code I think I get $5? AIKC-D3B7
Visible gives you 12 international day passes for annual plans if you value that. I use total by Verizon now. I get a local sim and us number works on wifi calling.
If you have Spectrum Internet you can get the Spectrum Mobile Unlimited Plus for $40/mo and includes International data and free texting for 175+ countries. They use Verizon Network
I think it’s $20 surcharge more if no Internet account-sign up for internet and then cancel internet if you wanna get the international features for the travel times for $20 more ![]()
I have been with Mint for several years. Good customer service when needed. Only downside is high junk fees when purchasing/renewing. I have been able to get junk fees waived on renewal by stating I am going to cancel service.
Used the international plan in Europe last year. Worked well, and easy to activate.
