I bought a vehicle a few months ago and I’ve been having an issue with the NY DMV issuing title/plates for my new vehicle I bought during peak COVID. There was an address change (I moved) a month after buying the car and it messed everything up. I blame myself just as much as the dealer (nobody told me not to change my address with insurance when I reached out to ask) but my question is my PA temp plate expired June 20th and the dealer has stated that it “can’t issue a new one”. Does anyone know if this is true? I haven’t driven the vehicle since the temp plate expired (and I’m still waiting on the plates) but I was just a bit surprised to find out it’s a big deal to issue a 2nd temp plate. Can anyone verify this?
While I agree in theory, I really would hate to be the test case. I bought a new Harley and got my plates in under two weeks after dropping off the paperwork.
Not sure about PA specifically, but CT and NJ don’t allow more than 1 temp tag for out of state residents. MD does. Personally, would doubt the dealer would lie about not being able to issue a new temp tag (they are nominal in cost) They could send you a dealer plate for you to use, but dealerships seem mixed about doing that. Two dealerships have done for me (one didn’t send in the registration to the DMV until after the temp tags expires, the other one didn’t have the title for an off-lease car they sold me cash). Others have refused citing insurance liability issues.
Great to know, thank you for the input. I don’t expect a dealer plate or anything crazy like that because this really was my fault and I don’t blame them in the last bit. They could have helpfully said “Don’t do that idiot” when I told them I was changing my address but ultimately it’s my fault because I wanted to save some money on insurance after moving out of NYC.
