Outsource Your Childcare to Mary Poppins 🚼

Have had a Mon-Fri live in nanny/housekeeper for years. Spouse used to travel 5 days a week, 40+ weeks a year. Now has own business. Plus I have my own career. Best financial decision we’ve ever made. Seriously. They become extended part of the family. Increases family harmony (you all tend to act more politely and civilly in front of others), and a lot of love. Downside is cost and loss of some privacy. But with daycare being so expensive, it’s not that big a difference when you have 2 kids. We used the help to get our earning power up, it became a no brainer for us. If you can do your own taxes, you can manage the paperwork. Not much in it. Few things to file every quarter, make a few payments, W2/W3 once a year, and you’re set. No need to hire an agency to do payroll, manage taxes etc. Many websites with the information.

Here’s how to work out what to pay. Find what restaurant, cleaners etc get paid per hour in your area, multiply it by 40, then that by 52, then by 1.08 (payroll taxes etc). Extra bedroom. That’s what it’s going to cost you. You’ll have a lot of good people who would rather work in the comfort of a home than in a manual job without security. Don’t pay hourly - pay no matter what. You don’t want your nanny worrying if you are going on vacation and not paying them - they also have bills to cover. Some nanny’s won’t want to stay overnight. That’s fine depending on how old your kids are, and if you have enough coverage without them. Just do an 8 hour schedule per day, or whatever works.

We did OK without a nanny, using daycare, until the second child came along. Then the ā€œDā€ word came up. That’s when we knew we needed to try something different. Never looked back.

And you feel good. You’re providing employment, paying taxes, making your own life better, making someone else’s life and family better. Wins all around.

Divorce lawyers going to be working 80 hour weeks after the courts open back up. I have a friend who does it in Virginia who is already gearing up for just an impossible, although very lucrative, next year.

Personally, we brought back an old nanny on a part time very expensive basis when out daycare closes. Two parents working with a toddler and no help is impossible. However expensive the help is, it has dramatically reduced marital strife.

I feel your pain. 4 and 2 yr olds at home while the wife and I try to get shit done while also trying to keep the animals busy. Fun juggling act.

Can’t wait for mass to re-open those daycares!

Looking at July now

If we’re lucky…

Is it LA county or metro LA (LAUSD) that’s the shit show? My understanding is that it’s the latter.

I’m in LA county’s area (not LAUSD) and the schools around here are a shit show too.

This guy wan’t fired. They paid him $40,000 to drop his appeals, which is effectively a severance package.

I don’t know what else to say.

Berndt taught at the south Los Angeles school for more than 30 years. The allegations against him came to light when a drugstore photo technician noticed dozens of odd photos of blindfolded third-graders and reported them to authorities.

He…had the pictures developed at the drug store? Was his instamatic out of film?

What a ghoul.

Which neighborhood are you in? There are a lot of good public schools.

La Canada
Glendale / La Crescenta
South Pasadena
Valencia

Etc etc

I’m out in Lancaster

Damn that’s far up. Yeah, schools are not good there or Palmdale.

Are you 100% going to FL? If not, Santa Clarita has some good schools and housing is somewhat affordable!

Already accepted a job there and planning on leaving Ca Jan 1. There are a lot of other reasons I want out of CA other than just the schools.

Santa Clarita housing is ā€œaffordableā€ compared to LA, sure, but it’s still stupid expensive.

3 in about a year (2017) 2 high school, and one elementary. We have I think a running total of 4 total fired for sex crimes and now we can’t even have teacher phone #s for clubs and off campus education.

There’s a whole running gag about student teacher contact, no hugs, handshakes, or hand physical contact, and other stupid rules. Saddest part is 2 of them have been let out, and one lives in NC now.

Well, last time I checked there were about 4 1/2 weeks in a month. So 4.5 * 301 = $1,354 a month.

That gets a Cayenne all day errrrday.
