Hi- Sorry if this Is too long.
I found this deal
2019- BMW 530e $489 month. I was happy with the price and lease terms. After I saw the car, we move forward with applying. I was approved stage one documents sent- credit app approved, but here is where I’m starting to feel a bit uneasy .
1st- the current owner was behind almost 2 payments due to covid. He used the BMW’s payment deferment and didn’t pay. So he was surprised that he had to catch to payments up before we moved on to stage 2. - ok he took care of that… THIS is where I am questioning my decision to take over this car.
2- HE LET THE REGISTRATION EXPIRE due to covid. (I think he could have paid it online but didnt want to spend the money). Since the car is in his name, he was able to go to the dmv pay the reg. get it up to date without penalties.
now hes texting me saying… “hey I need you to reimburse me for the registration fees. Which equates to $560.00” I paid the BMW transfer fee of $500. Am I also responsible for HIS fees? My boyfriend is saying no way. We did him a favor by taking over the car and paying BMW. He needs to pay for his registration. He let it expire on purpose, he could have renewed online.
What should I do. I’m pretty positive he is strapped for cash. But is this my responsibility . If I back out now, it’ll be hard for him to find someone to pay the BMW fee AND pay him for registration. Or I am wrong?
Edit: I don’t know how to look at this, because if he had posted the car in January and I took it over, then I would be paying to renew the registration.
Any advice helps.
Thank you
You aren’t responsible for his expired registration
If he’s adamant on me paying, I need to back out of this deal. Right?
Unless you agreed to pay the registration before doing the deal, then yes, he can go pound sand.
If you do, BMW will refund you all of the transfer fee except $100 for the initial credit application as long as you havent already completed the last paperwork stage. So, if you feel uncomfortable going forward, that is all you have to lose.
omg thank you for this information. I thought I was out $500. Do I call them to cancel everything? What if I find another BMW, can that approved credit app go towards another lease transfer?
Yes…Just give them a call and they will cancel everything if that is what you decide to do.
That may be possible, but it would be a manual process for them to do. The initial credit application on a car with BMW is online and automated.
If you really want the car, proceed and don’t pay for anything you didn’t agree to. If you would like to drop out, then you’re free to do that too.
yes my boyfriend said the same. No way. I think I will drop out now. Even if he agrees, it makes me nervous because the car is about an hour away. What if he did something to it and now I’m responsible .
Does the CA registration always renew on January 1st? FL registrations are due on the owner’s birthdate.
Was he driving with an expired registration for 7 months?
Sucks for them. Losing the deal trying to be shady.
Here in CA its the date of first registration in the state. So if a person signs a new car on July 19th, reg will always be due for the following years on Jul 19th.
However, someone correct me if im wrong, they aren’t enforcing expired registration due to COVID and DMVs being closed.
I kinda don’t understand your situation. Did he pay the registration or not? When was it due?
I dont think you are wrong, but the seller may feel that he’s paying 1-year’s registration fee for a car that is not going to drive. It makes sense to me that if you are taking over the car around the birthday of the registration date, and you will use the registration fee in its entirety, it should be on you
to my understanding they weren’t enforcing it. His registration expired like 2 months. It should have been paid. I was told that since it was expired, if I took possession of the car then I would have to pay the new reg+ penalty.
As a side note, I also have a 530e with a monthly of 530e (including tax) that I was thinking of putting on transfer, but got too busy with other stuff, so deciding to pay the registration fee and keeping it for one year. Fee is due this weel
when I first applied for the car, he did not have anything up to date, the monthly payments or registration. It expired almost 2 months ago. idk if he didnt have the money, or tried to just pass it off to someone else. My boyfriend is saying no way, we are doing him the favor of taking the car + we paid BMW. he can cover the registration that should have been paid months ago.
Understand. I dont think he should have let it expire but playing the devils advocate for a second. If he paid $600 fee for the year, and you drive the car for 10 months, he may feel, justly or unjustly, and he paid the fee for someone else.?
What’s your monthly payment ? At $489 is this car a steal?
lol. Mine is a 59K 530E with Driving Assistant Plus package. I dont think its a unicorn but its a much better than average deal. You should still be able to get $1000 from your utility company if its ur first EV in the household
