Need help negotiating a lease for my mother in law 2018 subaru forester

the MiL got hosed by toyota last time leasing a yaris and I want to make sure it doesn’t happen again.

some background on her: she has excellent credit and only drives 3-4k miles a year. She has some money to put down but I want to avoid it.

The car is a 2018 forester 2.5i. here is alink to autotrade that has a breakdown of the options: https://www.autotrader.com/research/configure/summary.jsp?

This is the initial offer from the dealer:

Sticker price is $23795 (MSRP) + $1428 (Options) +$915 (destination fee) = $26138

Invoice according to autolender is $22455 (not including options and destination fee)

Dealer wil lease it at $24975 + $199 (window etching) + $296.50 (DMV fees) + $297 (doc fee)

Tax is 6.625%

Residual for 36 months and 10k miles/year is $16249.18

These are the 3 options:

$0 down --> $329/mo

$1000 down --> $299/mo

$2000 down --> $270/mo

Would nix the window etching in any final deal. I don’t have the actual money factor but crunching numbers in calculator puts it at .00106

Browsing through the forum it looks like I can expect the dealer to be willing to drop below invoice for the lease but I’m not sure how much lower. I’ve contacted another subaru dealer to see what they are willing to offer.

any input anybody could provide would be greatly appreciated

This seems pretty awful. A bigger discount is definitely necessary

I don’t see anything in your link. I helped my niece get a 2017 Forester in June 2017 near SF. There was a package discount on the alloy wheel pkg, which made the residual effectively a little higher. The dealer suggested we find a “Subaru Ambassador,” who can dish out a $500 coupon that’s treated like a rebate. They’re not as easy to find now except through social media like Facebook. Your payment seems really high, which is probably from the discount not being so great. I don’t know how the market has changed, but somebody in your area should know. Look for info here:

This is what we got 14 months ago. I thought it was outstanding:

MSRP $25416 (after pkg discount, maybe $25,700 or so before, which RV is based on)
Your price $22400
residual $16845.40
money factor .00100
drive off $2000
35 payments with tax $184.81

This is pretty bad.

Don’t Outbacks lease better?

What about a VW with a 7500 mile yearly allowance?

I saw a $500 Costco promotion on Outbacks.

Not sure what’s in the options, but get her eyesight. Try to get at least $1,500 under invoice.

Why lease? You’re leaving money on the table returning a 3yr old Subaru with only 11k miles on it.

They can easily trade it, if there is enough equity. That might not be the case if RV on the lease is high now and Subaru is usually spot on. Low mileage can still give some equity, though.
