Leather vs leatherette

I’ve worked at an OEM that did a fairly detailed study by taking vehicles and covering them with tarps/blanking out the logos. The goal was to have people sit in the various interiors and assess their subjective interpretation of “quality.”

But one extra step they took was to swap seats off their rails and plop them into other vehicles. So a respondent could be in a Cadillac vehicle but be sitting on a Dodge seat. And they’d swap the seats around between testing cohorts to try and get more useful data than if they just had the seats in the original vehicle the seat came from.

IIRC the best rated “leather seating” seat was the Lexus RX seat that ironically at the time had the smallest surface area of real actual leather. The seats with no leather at all typically outperformed the subjective test regardless of which vehicle the seats were in.

Also IIRC, the base BMW Sensatec in a 3-series performed the absolute worst in terms of assessment. But, any seat placed in the 3-series performed the best since it seems the survey people could still tell they were in a BMW - so the BMW “seat” they were on had to be the best! Right?

TLDR, just get a BMW and your brain will think you’re sitting on the best seat ever because now you’re in a BMW.

which part of 1970s benzes has anything to do with the cheap Chinese crap they put in benzes today
