I am interested in assuming a BMW lease from a private party. He lives in UT and I am in CA. The car is a 2016 model with around 12k miles.
Can anyone provide any insights on how the registration paperwork would go? The CA DMV website is pretty confusing. Will I need to get it smogged? The seller says that Utah keeps the plates upon transfer. How would you reconcile the registration and sales/use tax amounts considering it varies between the states? Do I just need a title and bill of sale?

BMW should take care of the CA DMV transfer paperwork. Need to see if the car meets California emission standards. It will say in the engine compartment. If it does than no need to smog. If it doesn’t then BMW of North America will alert you after you fill out the lease transfer paperwork. I just went through similar situation here in California. I helped my friend get into a 2017 Ford Flex with very specific amenities. There were none in the state so I found one in North Carolina. But the car did not have the sticker stating it meets all US state’s emission standards. So he paid for car (no tax), shipping (to SD) and once he got the paperwork (from the dealership he started the DMV process). However, DMV required a smog certificate (car had less than 12K on the ODO). However there is a caveat. We have a big military (Navy) presence in San Diego and I see out of state licence plates daily and if the service member elects NOT to register car in CA then no smog required.
For confirmation I would call BMW finance directly and ask the question with out of state lease transfers.
