Is a Lien Free Title required to sell to Carvana, Vroom, etc. in NY

Did you already try shopping it to the local Merc dealers?

They will give me much less than any retail site. But it might be worth it to check again. That said I’m not sure if they are incentivized to give any larger amount since I will not be purchasing from them

The incentive is getting a car they can sell for $$$$.
If they are giving incentives because you are also buying a car, be assured that they are paying you extra on the trade to steal it back on the purchase.

I’m also checking the car dealer I’m trying to buy a new car from. The good thing there is that I can avoid paying taxes on the trade in amount. So while it’s 5k less than vroom(55 vs 50). It’s still netting around the same with the (50x0.08875) tax savings.
Question is if the new dealership is willing to accept my paperwork.

Well that’s one thing that’s nice about NY, you get your tax money off the top.

I don’t think it works that way in CA, they luv taxes.

Ok. so the dealership also said I need the title in my name. damm!t. three strikes! i guess I am out and I need to go to the DMV. this is going to be painful.

i went to the DMV as soon as i got the title from BMW. Did all the paperwork, paid 50$ for the fee and should have it in two to four weeks. same should apply to you.

Go on carmax chat and request a link for remote appraisal.

They said based on my high value vehicle it had to be in person. Not sure why its a high value vehicle. It’s a 2018 gls 450

Geesh. Bad luck all around. They gave me a remote appraisal on a $55k jeep.

Carmax won’t accept his car without title in his name and active registration anyway.

Call a licensed NY DMV expediter. They can work magic in general, or at least guide you best.

I like Plate Man in Staten Italy. Super good folk.

from what I’ve gathered, he has active reg. Maybe I misunderstood. Maybe reg is still in lienholder’s name, which would present another layer to the problem.

there was zero reason to do what you did. plenty of places, including here, are able to cash out MB leases to avoid the headache you’re dealing with now. why not just go that route?

In the beginning I was going to go that route, but then the company I wanted to cash out my lease with stopped responding. I was a little frustrated and at the same time, the price that Vroom was quoting me back on 12/30 was much more than the quote from the company. So thats when I decided to go ahead with a retail sale. Fast forward to today, my value is about 5k less than a month ago, which is unfortunate.
That said, I dont think I have any options now other than to go take care of the title with the DMV, or via plate man. I’ll give plateman a call tomorrow.

awesome. is he expensive to use? I was planning on heading to the DMV tomorrow to give it a shot, but before that I’ll give plateman a call. great name. haha.

Just to close the loop here. I ended going to an expeditor, which was an extra $100, but it did save me from having to do any paperwork, waiting in line at the DMV, or any other hassle. It was literally 10 minutes of time, and signing in two places. That said, lets start the countdown and we’ll see how many weeks it will take for me to have the new title.

thanks for all the help guys.
