How does the lease change when you move to another state?

,

I will be moving from NY to GA in the next few months. I got my current lease in NY. What are the steps and changes I have to make when I move? Is it just registering the vehicle there or it has other impacts in the monthly payment?

Thanks in advance for your answers

Register the vehicle and notify the lessor.

Your payment may change based on how tax is handled in the new state.

Why you are moving out from NY?:rofl::rofl:
I think on short phone call to the lessor will answer all your questions.

I moved with a Jeep 4XE lease from Florida to Georgia back in 2022, TBH it was kind of a pain in the butt but did eventually work out ok.

In Georgia, they tax the total lease payments up front (TAVT) rather than monthly like Florida, so I did have to pay a lump sum of a few hundred to get it registered, but my monthly payment dropped since the taxes dropped off. Not sure how it works in NY, but the TAVT is required for everyone (though you do get a 50% discount off the standard TAVT when you move here)

The biggest pain was that Georgia requires that you bring a limited power of attorney signed by the finance company, authorizing me to register the Jeep. For some companies this may be quick and easy, for Chrysler Capital it was a nightmare - had to call probably 10-15 times to a group that never answered the line, only voicemail every time. I did eventually get the form in the mail, but it took like 30-60 days if I recall correctly.

I believe this was the page I used to get everything I needed: https://dor.georgia.gov/motor-vehicles/vehicle-registration-license-plates/new-georgia

Welcome to Georgia! Seriously love it here.

Thanks for your answers.

Additionally, I may need another car and I was thinking if it would be beneficial to get it here in NY before moving and then register it again there, or wait until we move and get the new car there. If I get a good deal here in NY before moving it may be worth it to go through the registration process for both cars.

Your comments/opinions are appreciated

How much is the registration cost in GA?

That would be key to decide if it is better to get a car in NY and register it again in GA in a few months or just wait and buy it there.

Registration is super cheap here except for EV’s. Annual registration here is about $20. If your gas car is 3+ years old, you also have to do an annual emissions inspection which runs about $20-25. EV’s get hit with an annual fee of about $230, plus the $20 annual registration.

It might save a bit (3% for new residents bringing a car here) vs 7% for cars bought in Georgia, but I’ve read somewhere that you may have had the car registered for 12+ months out of state first in order to qualify for the 3%. Might be worth a quick call to the Georgia DDS to confirm, they’ve been surprisingly helpful the few times I had questions.

Honestly, its probably not a huge diff that I would stress about, if anything I would probably rather just buy one here and not have to deal with the headache of trying to get those forms signed by the leasing company
