How are y'all registering your leases in Montana?

I saw some of y’all’s plates on the “Trophy Garage” post and noticed some of y’all had MT plates. How did y’all get that going and work it out with insurance? For context, I am based out of North Carolina.

NC has like 3% on monthly in taxes. Why bother

Agree. But need to ask @djrabbi lol

They also have PPT.

just to keep total cost of ownership down. I don’t really care if I can’t register in MT but if I could, that’s a win.

It looks like 0.5-1% of assessed value. Comparing to Fairfax VA. 4.15% sale tax on sale price. Plus ~4.5% property taxes. NC looks like a tax heaven from here

The move is questionable unless you have a legitimate reason to use the car to do business in Montana. Especially given NC is already very low cost when it comes to taxes

No real reason for business use other than obv tax avoidance. That’s really it. I’m also planning on acquiring an 2016 MY F80 m3 and that would also sit under the LLC for permanent registration.

Openly admitting to tax fraud on an online forum can be significantly more expensive than paying $20/month more in taxes.

How do you do, fellow Montanans?

Works great until you get into an accident and the insurance company denies your claim. But hey you saved $30 a month in sales tax. That’s totally worth the tradeoff.

TLDR don’t commit fraud kids

You declare your state on the insurance. The llc ownership might cause issues but never lie about where it is garaged

Congrats. You’re on a watchlist now.

This is only the case if you (or your ins agent) is an idiot.

OP, just register your car where you live. Saving 3% on monthly tax payments makes no sense

Would an insurance company be cool with this setup, if you’re truthful about it? I kinda doubt it.

If you lie about garage point, they have grounds for fraud.

If you say it has MT plates, then its their choice. They arent the government so there is a good chance it works.

I know a guy who does this in CA, but he does it to avoid smog

And of course, lemon law is probably going to be void as a claim is complicated. Didnt a broker here once post, his MT car bought in AZ with CA insurance and was a lemon?

Either way seems like a lot of squeeze for not much juice.

I dunno what you’re asking me. I have no idea :man_shrugging:
