Hit and run on a parked car (NYC life…)

This is true. I always cringe when I’m in the city and park on city streets.

Brooklyn streets are just awful.

Skip insurance and get that repaired on your own dime. It’s not worth putting in a claim.

Can they raise his rates for this?

Maybe file and police report and show it to them.

Should not raise rates for parked and unoccupied, at least when I was in the biz.

Do most of the body shops generally deal with the wheel repair of this extent?

Or better off going to a wheel specialist shop?

To prove this, I should have called the police at the scene to prove that point?

They why is half the people on this thread saying to pay cash?

Also, OP, were there any stores across the street that would have cameras?

Idk maybe they never worked in the insurance world? Everyone just assumes claims = rates skyrocket…not the case if not at fault, especially clearly not at fault. I worked in PA, insurance laws differ in every state. If you start to file multiple claims like this over a period of time, yeah, prob raise rates.

The body shop will outsource it to a local tire / power coat shop

Subway (sandwich) is across the street. Didn’t have a close look around because I was just so freaking mad. Coming to the same area tomorrow so I will check…

I never needed proof when handling those types of claims. Call your agent without filing a claim they should be able to give you details.

Every company handles things differently.

Check the whole block.

Go inside to the stores (probably when they are not busy) and ask nicely if you can see the footage.

To see if it’s worth making a claim at all.

Even if it

Is the repair more than my deductible? It may not raise my rates, but it’s not a $0 deductible.

Also: what other collateral damage is already on one’e CLUE report? Do I want to add this?

If it’s a lease: this is why I usually lease. If I own, and I’m running through insurance, there might be a diminished value claim.

But I don’t know until I get an estimate that isn’t skewed by insurance’s repair rates

As for wheel: body shop can quote it, but may outsource it anyway. If I’m paying cash, I’d probably dig further. If it’s an insurance claim I’d let body shop deal with it.

Trying to get a quote through Yelp from some of the shops based on photos, and it seems like this will range 550-700 for the body and 150-200 for the wheel.

Will keep you guys posted.

I do not work in insurance, and laws from state to state differ as well as insurance companies and how they handle claims. However, I speak from personal experience about what happened when my parked vehicle incurred $2,000 worth of damage (I say this, so the OP knows I am not merely guessing). I would instead have paid the 2K+ than be stuck with a higher rate that will remain for 3-5 years.

I advise you not to file a claim unless you can confirm it will not raise your rates, @whawhaxd. If it does not, excellent, but just as @hhbean and @jeisensc mentioned, it may end up on your CLUE Report. So while your rates might stay the same with your current carrier, that would change if you switch within 3-5 years after filing the claim.

Food for thought. Having just gone through something similar, I know how frustrating this experience can be, and I hope everything works in your favor (especially obtaining video evidence – which I could not do).

(P.S. Progressive is my insurance company)

Is this car leased? I work in the South Bronx (slightly nicer area than Bushwick). If the car is leased, I’d try to find a neighborhood place to fix it cheap. As long as the paint matches you should be good to go. Very similar thing happened to my Tacoma and I had it fixed for $250. Check around one of the wheel repair shops to get your rim fixed.

What, rent a cops but even worse? From le cirque non?

OP, if those wheels are painted black, you’ll need to get them refinished and repowder coated no?

Nothing can be nicer than the South Bronx, yeah.
