Help! Dealer asking to sign contract again?

Are the numbers actually different on what you signed vs what they are asking you to now e-sign? If so, what are the numbers. It is very strange that a dealer would threaten you with legal if they are changing the terms on you without your request. Something is not adding up.

Either they’re not making sense or too much is getting lost in translation.

Tell them to communicate in writing only from now on.

The numbers are different but off by $5 on monthly so not wildly different. But it’s also dated differently. This part also complicates the rebate application because it’s an EV.

So I’m just saying I won’t sign another one on top of the one I already signed.

Dated differently or not, the rebate is applied if the only difference is $5/month. Unless I’m missing something here? $5/month is $180 over 3 years. For me, that’s a very nominal cost to avoid the aggravation of going back and forth with a dealer and also having to start from scratch on a new car next month.

Your options are either you sign or you ask them when they would like you to drop off the car.

Rebates are different state to state. For very specific reasons, the dating here is critical for eligibility (which I won’t get into). I wish dropping off the car is straightforward but when I brought this up that’s what the salesman said about legal. Most likely it’s intimidation.

I don’t think anyone here is going to be able to help you since it seems like there is rather vital information missing. Perhaps it would be helpful for you to seek a free, brief legal consultation?

Do yourself and the store a favor, just return the car and get your money back.

This is a lease and therefore your rebates are presumably applied to the deal. If the total cost is only $5 per month, what difference does the date make to you?

If you want to return the car, bypass the salesman and go to the sales manager. If the sales manager is not willing to play ball, then take it to the GM.

Then just return the car, inform them via email what time you’ll be there and ask that they have a check ready for you.

Certainly you seem to be making this more difficult than it needs to be. It’s rare to see a mid month rebate change and even more so if that’s what your worried about then it was an even bigger issue that you resolve today either keeping the car with a new contract or unwinding and moving on.

The guy just wants to back out of the deal he signed.

OP is talking about state rebate, even then it’s still not making any sense a date difference which I assume between february - april make a big difference unless there’s a state with march financial year end or something.

Still calling BS. He’s leaving out information for some reason. Agree with the bear @Ursus

What’s BS, and what information are you looking for?

The question was about why I’m being asked to sign a new contract, and whether the whole thing could just be unwound based on this. I stated to them and here that if the original contract is good, then it’s all done. However, if not then if the dealer gets to change terms (however slightly) then I should have the option to change my mind and get out also.

My reasons are immaterial although I shared it was to do with rebates. You assumed it was a manufacturer rebate and were corrected and still claim to be missing information which is irrelevant to the question posed.

What state rebate? When does it expire? Never heard of a rebate expiring in the middle of the month. Yeah, information and full disclosure is needed if you want help. You’re giving one side of the story with limited context. Everyone told you to go in and return the car. The dealer’s response is peculiar but in the absence of the full picture, it may be warranted. Any particular reason why you are leaving specifics out?

Then as I said above just be honest with the dealer. Don’t overthink it. If the new date of the contract is causing a rebate issue then just tell them that.

“Sorry Mr. Dealer, because the new contract is dated X when the original was dated Y I am now going to miss out on rebates XYZ. I no longer wish to move forward and will drop the car back off tomorrow at 3pm.”
