GM Will Remove Apple CarPlay And Android Auto From All Its Cars, Not Just EVs

Seems pretty bold to me, removing something that people like. Guess I’ll be avoiding GM rental cars in the future, don’t enjoy logging into to apps in a rental, prefer plug/pair and go.

So stupid and as consumers we should fight this tooth and nail. The only things I ever use while driving is audio and maps. There is no need to enter the other interfaces and I’m going to guess whatever crappy system they come up with will be infinitely more “ clunky “

We don’t miss CarPlay in our Blazer EV at all, except when the car’s native GPS doesn’t work (like right now).

Wait is that a known issue? I’ve had that problem with my Equinox EV for the past month or so I thought it needed an update of some kind and I couldn’t visit the dealer yet so didn’t think much of it.

We had two problems, both seemingly GPS related.

  1. While routing in Google Maps, the car’s location jumps to a random spot and never returns to the car’s actual position. I’ve tried all of the troubleshooting steps I can find, and can’t get this to work again. This suddenly stopped working within the past several weeks.

  2. Charging station finder (which we don’t use) returns an OnStar error. I was able to get this to work after various troubleshooting steps. I only attempted this because I thought fixing one of these things might fix both.

Blazer has a recall, so I plan to have the maps problem fixed at the same time.

I get it if it was super expensive for GM to have it, but I doubt it, and cars are so expensive anyway. Is it really that big of deal to pay for the licensing? Worse case scenario you just make the consumer pay to unlock the CarPlay/Android auto option, but to completely remove it seems stupid, but hey it’s not the first or last time GM does something stupid

Yup exactly the same issue with my EqEV. Could be a GM wide thing

Only thing I miss is Apple Music, but since I also have Youtube Premium I can live with that.

Haven’t had any issues with the GPS on my 26 Sierra EV… I know it is slightly different than Chevys, but not by much.

I still don’t get it, with all the all the tech available now, why remove something? I’m not saying CarPlay etc is the best invention ever, but it’s convenient and works well, I can hop in any car with it and in one minute it’s up and running. No reason you couldn’t pick between GM’s google and CarPlay/AA, GM doing GM things.

I was thinking of getting a Tahoe HC or Yukon Denali, but not sure now.

Think about the cost of creating and maintaining a native infotainment / navigation system while also maintaining a car’s interoperability with two separate, rapidly changing overlapping solutions from two outside companies over which you have no control.

Some of the newer GM cars (like our Blazer EV) are Google powered, requiring you to sign into Google to unlock full functionality. The 70% of the US population that uses Android phones can use their Android apps right on the infotainment screen. In comparison, phone mirroring is so last year.

GM has done the cost / benefit analysis, and clearly they’ve determined that any loss of sales is outweighed by savings from foregoing the ongoing development and maintenance costs of supporting largely redundant systems.

Same. I was initially surprised it wasn’t there, but once I signed in to Maps with my Google account and added Audible and YouTube, I didn’t care about not having Apple CarPlay.

Half the time AppleCar was glitchy on Nissan Arya and would not even connect. It also glitched on ID.4 thought not as frequently.

Because it creates redundancies in the UI/experience. When I had my BMW i4, it was annoying having to toggle in and out of the carplay UI for things like navigation if I wanted to plot out charging station options. I found BMW’s navigation more effective for that, but if carplay was on you could have multiple maps going at once. Or BMW maps would pull me out of carplay or vice versa etc.

With my Silverado I like that I have Google maps right there, I can push routes from my app to the car without issue, and all of the logic around chargers/vehicle range etc is already there. With that said, the Spotify app experience is inferior to carplay and its definitely not as nice/seamless of an experience to what Apple has created. I would say 4 out of 5 of my last cars have also ended up with inevitable bluetooth glitching, or carplay connection failures that make it useless.

I really doubt it’s that complicated, you can buy whole CarPlay systems for cheap, so the hardware/software and licensing isn’t expensive. GM has done a lot of cost/benefit analysis over the years, and I’d say they have failed more times than not.

This is the same company that disabled Saab vehicles to use handsfree capability in the new 9-3(US market) when it came out so you could use OnStar! :laughing:

also gave up first mover advantage not once not twice but three times (EV1 Volt and Bolt)

Cannot remember the last time I’ve had a connection issue on the Ariya.

The only glitch I had was after upgrading to IOS 26 and Waze would have readability issues due to font color.

That said, I don’t miss it at the Sierra EV (besides the absence of Apple Music).
