Hey guys, I’m from Texas and my sister will be heading out to Tucson, AZ for the next two years, and I need to lease her a vehicle while she’s out there. What’s the best way to go about this? Lease here? Lease there? I’ve seen quite a few great deals pop up on here in SoCal since I’ve joined the forum - leasing from there an option?
Almost certainly it will be cheaper to get the vehicle from Cali and register it in AZ. In Texas you pay sales tax on the whole vehicle, not just the percentage you’re leasing, plus for most makes better deals can be had in Cali.
That’s just from a purely financial point of view, assuming you have some time to find a good deal. Depending on the vehicle you’re looking for, timing, and the urgency that your sister needs the vehicle it might make more sense to get the vehicle here or in AZ.
If it is only 2 years then I’d highly recommend something like swapalease.com as it suits shorter term lease requirements if your sister has good credit and you’re open minded about vehicles.

Yeah I see all the great deals come out of Cali. I’ve leased here in Texas, but only when tax credits are available.
I was checking through swapalease last night. When taking over a lease, what are some things to look for to make sure I don’t get hit with surprise costs at the end?
we’ve discussed this a lot on this forum, this question comes up frequently, you can use the search function and search for terms like “swapalease”, “lease assumption” etc.
we’ve almost never seen good lease deals come out of AZ. Texas isn’t bad if you can get the tax credit, however SoCal is the way to go if you have the ability to shop there and drive/ship it to AZ. Depending on the brand, we have a few SoCal dealers on this site that offer great deals without much hassle.

Being from AZ, and eyeing also a lease from CA, it is frustrating to see the numbers of deals Cal-only.
Does it mean even when presenting in person (and maybe with a trailer not to touch the sacred CA ground?) they refuse to deal ?
some dealers won’t do out of state deals period. Most will though. You will have to ask.
Do you ever see tax breaks out in AZ?
Texas is the only place I know that does sales tax credits, it normally brings tax down to around 1%.
