I’ve noticed at least three different patterns with AI-use across various message boards including LH:
- AI/Bot posts AI/Bot-generated content - how this usually shows up on LH is a necro-post from years ago, replying to advertise something, e.g. transport, warranties, tech products.
** Historically our community and mods have been on top of these, they’re obvious and posts removed/users banned quickly.
** Other automotive message boards have a first-party AI bot that responds to almost every post, the regulars who bicker with it can sometimes be entertaining. Thankfully LH admins have thus-far spared us this nuisance. - AI slop in the reply - (ostensibly) real human using something like ChatGPT or Gemini to write their replies. Overly-wordy with perfect spelling and grammar, not difficult to differentiate from someone using voice dictation (wordy, correct spelling, mis-used homophones and punctuation). A couple examples already in this thread.
- Human poster / human reply / advocating for AI’s response - LH has thus-far been a safe-haven against this because we still haven’t seen an LLM calculate a lease correctly without being spoon-fed the inputs and calculation.
** Without casting aspersions, there are two different forums where I lurk that have the same theme: one has a strict “no AI at all” policy and will remove AI citations from within posts, the other not only allows AI content but has one prominent member who seems to be in a situationship with Grok: cites it regularly and frequently posts as-if Grok were not only their best friend but has durable power of attorney over all their financial and medical decisions.
** On other message boards I’ve seen their policy allow AI-generated content provided it’s clearly labeled as-such AND you include the LLM that was queried and the entire prompt.
I think this is generally the right answer if a particular user is bothering you, but it’s a fair question to ask “Is the current state of AI usage reflected in the Community Standards?”

It’s not up to me, but if it were:
- AI spam bots and their content should be nuked
- Posts from otherwise seemingly human posters that was entirely word-smithed by AI should be chided (e.g. your content appears to be entirely AI-generated which isn’t allowed, if you continue to post only AI-generated content it may be subject to suspension)
- (I’ve done this myself here, so consider me scolded) anyone citing AI as a resource in their replies shouldn’t - just direct the user to do an Internet or AI search for the relevant answers (no spoons for you)
I think conclusion/action plan #1 is def the approach of the community mods/owners, and #2 and #3 are pretty much up to the community to act upon.

This is a funny topic because I’m convinced that over the years there have been multiple instances of AI based “users” coming here and interacting on the forums, almost like training exercises. They aren’t that hard to snuff out but like the Terminators they are getting better.
As someone who leverages AI a ton for my day job, it’s super obvious to tell; and they’re more coherent than the average please spoon feed me comments.

Spot on though — they really are way more coherent than the average low-effort “please spoon feed me” comments. It all depends on the subscription level though, higher tiers definitely crank out way better stuff ![]()

At my place we use Claude. I think the token usage cost is universal pain. They pushed hard to open it for everyone, and then like 3 days later sent frantic email for everyone to switch from Opus 4.7 to a much cheaper Sonnet.
What is the opposite of tokenmaxxing — tokenminning?
Yesterday I used Claude to analyze detailed Github Copilot billing for a client to reset budgets that were alarming constantly. The hardest part seems to be layering MS licensing and entitlements across pay-per-drink usage.
Anthropic/OpenAI/Perplexity token usage/billing is much more straightforward, but controlling it is not nearly as satisfying as the $8k in monthly AWS spend I yanked like a rotten tooth yesterday.

I agree with the consensus here – AI-generated content is not welcome. Like most of you, I too am exhausted from reading AI slop and would like to preserve LH as a place for genuine human interactions.

AI bot account/content is currently handled as spam. AI bot accounts are suspended by moderators when flagged.
We just created a new flag called “AI Slop” to discourage users from copying and pasting AI writing. Posts that are flagged by multiple members will be automatically hidden.
Are you referring to humans citing AI search results as you mentioned later in the post? I personally don’t mind citing AI results if it’s productive, but will minimize pasting AI search results myself because of AI fatigue. There is a difference between using AI as a tool and letting it stand in for real human conversation, which this forum is built for.
On that note, we added our policy on AI-generated content in our Community Standards and Moderation Guidelines.

I wish I saw your post before I deleted a text exchange with an AI “assistant” at a Midwest dealer that wanted to me to come in for a test drive. Small issue is that I’m in LA and I told AI that I would have to fly for that. It got extremely excited even when I told it that I would need their GM to handle my carry-on. It responded that the GM was currently not available but other managers were. I told it that that I would not accept anybody below GSM level to handle my precious carry on. That went on for a while until I figured that I’ve had enough and just typed “stop” and deleted the whole exchange.
After sensing that Gemini was being led by my own statements and complimenting my counterpoints, I asked if AI models are known for making the user feel uniquely smart/special. This is after trying to get clarity on the way Utah handles title reporting for Carfax purposes. What ensues is the following. I found it to be pretty revealing. It’s a long read so I apologize for the wall of text.
