Feedback on a Toyota GR86

First off, thank you all.

I live in CT, and have been communicating to a sales rep through email. The dealership is located in Smithfield RI, about an hour and a half away from me.

This vehicle is also advertised as $33,743 SmartPath Price* on the Toyota Dealership website. I plan on putting atleast 15 - 20k as down payment.

We haven’t run the credit check yet, but this is what they sent me:

MSRP: $33,323

Discount: $1,000

Selling Price: $32323

Documentation Fee: $400

Temp plate fee: $26.50

Title prep fee: $20.00

Registration: $400

Title fee: $25.00

Taxes (6.35%): $2079.18

Total: $35,273.68

I don’t see this car discussed here much at all, so I don’t know if there’s much info about what a solid discount is. You may want to look at, or even post, on a GR86-specific forum to see if there’s any recent data about selling price.

We need more % discounts off GR86/BRZ threads. Had the 2013 Scion FRS when it hit the streets. Fun car.

This is totally irrelevant. Dealer advertised prices aren’t worth the price of the paper they’re written on.

The GR86 is a great sports car. It does everything well, solid manual transmission, rear wheel drive, and great handling. It and the Miata are the best entry-level enthusiast cars.

As far as pricing, these often sell before they ever arrive on the dealer lot. If you can buy one at MSRP without any dealer adds, you’re doing well, a thousand-dollar discount is exceptional. You don’t see this car here on LH much because the manufacturer doesn’t have to spend any incentive dollars on it.

The deal as presented is solid, if you don’t want it, the car will sell within days. On the plus side, these hold their value very well, and even though you don’t find big discounts upfront, when the time comes to sell or trade in, you’ll be happy.

This all changes if the car is an automatic, they can be had at invoice or below, but you will absolutely lose whatever you saved when it comes time to sell or trade the car.

My experience is a few years old, but don’t waste time with the GR86 and Toyota dealers who treat you like you’re ordering a Rolls Royce. Just buy the BRZ from Subaru. Was much easier to custom order and get a discount.

As mentioned elsewhere, get the manual transmission. The car won’t be great in the CT snow, so hopefully you have something else to drive in the winter. My son has one and loves it, but it is a little tight for his 6’ frame. Head is almost hitting roof. You should also get a free track day with purchase. Take advantage of it.

I can get around 2-3k off with my fee included when they’re instock. Just not a high volume car really so they’re tough

Feel free to text me and I’ll check what I have

Snow tires are a must if you live in CT. I do have to say I’m a bit surprised your son finds it a tight fit. I’m 6’1 and had no issues even with a helmet on for a track day with my friend’s car.

So they ran my credit, and the term is 48 months at 7.82%. I’m thinking about using a credit union instead. However, they told me the $1,000 discount only applies to financing the vehicle.

I hate dealing with dealerships

If you hate them then purchase it for whatever rate they sell it to you. Then immediately refinance with your credit union before the 60 day mark. It impacts the dealership and their relationship with their lender. They will lose all income from the financing as well. I did this when a finance manager tried to play hardball with me after the terms were already agreed and jacked the rate by 3%. I smiled and said “no problem”. Joke’s on them.

It isn’t unheard of to have incentives that only apply when using certain financing methods, etc.

Is the $1000 a “discount” or an “incentive”? What should the incentives be, if any?

Jim mentioned his discount (with his fee included) beats this “deal” by a couple grand… Not sure why OP is still following up with this dealer. Either go with the broker and save yourself a few grand (and time/sanity), or try and negotiate your own deal with the info provided by said broker

I contacted Jim, but he never got back to me with the OTD price. I’m sure he’s very busy, so it’s understandable.

Sorry to hear that. Maybe reach out again and see if he responds? Hopefully just an oversight.

Month-end I am sure

I live in CT and have leased a Tacoma through Jim in the past. It was well worth the drive to PA. But this dealership seems like they are jerking you around. I’d move on. Plenty of Toyota dealers in CT & NY.

I’m heading to the dealership now. They stated I could refinance the vehicle, AFTER I finance the car fromt them first. When my first bill is due, I can payoff the balance using my Credit Union (PenFed). This CU gave me 48 months at 4.9%.

Wish me luck!

How did it work out for you, and are you enjoying the car?
