Every single model he picked (except the leaf because the battery degradation) was excellent and above “beater” level in a general price range consistent with yours. None of them are crappy and all under the RXs mileage.
If you really cant stomach any of those gems find a pre 2008 Toyota Sequoia. It’ll drain your wallet in fuel bills but will otherwise be bullet proof and is 100% undervalued.
We did the brakes on my son’s 2011 328i (150k miles now) last summer for ~$250 in parts (rotors and pads). [Labor was free as I made him do all the work with me just advising.]
