CX5 Negotiations

Hi All - any advice is appreciated. I’m working on a 2018 CX5 Touring AWD (machine grey, +300) in Minneapolis. Been going back and forth quite a bit and here is where I’m at and he is pushing back hard.

CX5 Touring AWD 36/10k:
MSRP: 28,755
Discount: 1,225
Rebate: 800
Sell price: 26,670
MF: 0.00068 I know this is marked up and a point of contention
RV: 61%

Bringing the MF to buy rate would have the monthly lease to maybe $320ish. I pushed back on the MF and this is what he said:
“There is only $800 mark up on new Mazda CX5’s - it is our best seller. Last month we sold 191 new Mazda’s and was 6th in the nation, 91 were CX5’s. On a lease as advertised we’re losing $1278 - at a base money factor we would be negative $3,800 on this deal. It wouldn’t make sense for us to do that deal. I’m sorry.”

Is it worth for me to keep going here? Other Mpls dealers refuse to negotiate. Best offer I could get was $339 which still isn’t great.

Thanks

Search outside your immediate area. There should be more room on that car. $320/month is Grand Touring territory, IMO.

I’m in Chicago now, moving to Mpls in 2 weeks. The guys in Chicago were starting at $440 (I know), then went to $380 (I know). I don’t even want to talk to that guy anymore.

By marking up the money factor (from the base rate of 0.00018 to 0.00068) the dealer is taking back $795 from the original $1,225 discount (which is pretty poor to begin with) and effectively discounting the car by only 1%. Hope this helps you to understand how bad this deal is…

Oh I get it, thanks. I’m more so looking for advice if I should even push back (with the reasoning you just provided) or just move on.

I would give them your best final offer and then walk. If they want your business, they’ll come chasing. If they don’t, you’ll know you made the right the choice to walk and find somewhere else.

For sure - appreciate the insight

Read some of the recent prices reported in this topic and ask for a similar discount. Reach out to all the Mazda dealers in your area asking for the same discount. They might be hesitant to give you a good discount now but they will probably follow up closer to the end of the month especially if they are tracking below sales targets for the month…

Thanks, I’ll read through it.

He came down to $324

What is due at signing and does $324 include your sales tax if so what is your tax rate?

Nothing due, 6.5%. Tax included. MN taxes on the payments.

Back working your numbers looks like they are now giving you the base money factor. It is unfortunate that you don’t have a current Mazda lease (would be another $750 added to the incentives). I know that in my local market (Colorado) there are larger dealer discounts available but if no other dealer in your area is willing to beat the 1,225 discount I guess it is an ok deal in your situation…

Yeah. It must be a Minneapolis thing for Mazda where they just aren’t going to work with you too much. I pushed for the preferred package at $330 and to consider it a done deal, we’ll see. It isn’t the greatest of prices, but isn’t the worst. Nonetheless, I’m comfortable with it. There aren’t many incentives, if any, to take advantage of. I threw in the “hey Costco discount gives me $5 a month” too.

i leased a 2015 CX-5 Touring on the last day of Oct in 2014 using this method. came out the dealer with 39/12k and $260/month including taxes. all I had to cover was DMV charges. also got tints, weather mats and sunshade thrown in.

I turned it in earlier this year, and now looking to do the same again from some insight of other posters here and their deal

good luck!!
