Consumer Reports: BMW 330i vs Volvo S60

You obviously like your T6 R. But here is a simple test: If you care about sportiness first - would you take your T6 R or 340i (or even 330i) all things being equal (price, comparable options, etc)?
And I did drive one (without sport chassis) and had a deal in place. My dealer gave me a brand new one for 2 days to try it. I returned it the following morning, unfortunately, because the seats did not work for me :slightly_smiling_face:
But I don’t care much about sportiness.

No doubt, all equal if I could’ve got into the 340i I woulda been on it! Mmmmm inline 6. We all make value choices all day man, I mean a 340i is nice but if I coulda got into a C63 AMG…

One of the guys on swedespeed was kinda miffed about the dropping of the standard sport chassis on the RD, Volvo customer care confirmed the suspension is the same Momentum/Inscription/R-Design in the US. I imagine Volvo might not have anything for me if the sport chassis becomes like the manual trans, dealers don’t stock them since they think nobody will want them, so nobody is able to buy one in stock if they want it, so dealers don’t stock them. Ah well I won’t worry about that, I just got this one lol.

I was really missing the cooled seats today, over 80 deg. Would have liked to have those.

Should’ve gotten the Inscription with luxury package :slightly_smiling_face:

I’m not surprised CR preferred the BMW. Volvo has been making mediocre cars for a very long time. Once you get over the fancy styling, their cars fall short of the competition. They don’t perform or ride as well as their German competition.

Re: Swedespeed

Those clowns live in their own dream world, just like the Tesla guys. If CR rated the S60 over the 330i, they would be praising CR.

I live in the fancy suburbs west of Boston so BMWs collect like belly button lint here. Good amount of the Volvo SUVs too. Don’t see many S60s coming and going. And I think subconsciously I like that, even if there is a BMW that is a better car. I don’t live in a comparison test.

We probably just see things the way we want to see them…I mean everything you say about Volvo, same powertrain/features, isn’t that the hallmark of every premium european brand, “same sausage different length?”

I’m not into the brand, be it BMW or Volvo. But take that drivetrain out of the lumbering SUV, drop it in the smallest sedan you got, give me the stiffest suspenders you got, I’m pretty happy. I’m not buying the brand, I’m buying a specific car.

The trim in some cars can make a world of difference. So comparing 3 series, even 330 or 340, vs s60 and keeping it :apple:: :apple: is not so easy. Performance on a 3 with track handling and staggered 19s ain’t the same as your average 3, for example. Comparing solely on msrp is also not so straightforward. I dunno why we spend so much time nitpicking the rationale for these comparisons, rather than just reading the comparo and appreciating the points being made.

But then Volvo will win

Can’t think of any other manufacturer that uses the exact same set of engines for every model in their lineup.

BMW? B48 4cyl, B58 6cyl, and N63 8cyl depending on the trim/size of car

:+1:

But Volvo literally just has the ONE engine but “simply” adds turbocharging, supercharging, and electrification to it.

It’s not a bad idea from an efficiency/engineering standpoint. But the Volvo doesn’t get very high marks from a NVH perspective, which will be more problematic (IMHO) than it “only” being a 4-cyl. And I agree that it may also be a problem in a segment where “specialness” and perception are perhaps more important than, well, anything else.

Had a chance to test drive the new G20 330xDrive and a 2019 S60 T6 Momentum this past weekend. Maybe on a spirited canyon drive one can detect the superior weight balance of the Bmw or the rear bias of the awd system but driving on city streets and highway, the S60 drives 95%+ same as the 3 series. I sat in an R-Design car in the showroom and it definitely felt special, especially the seats were unbelievably good. I for one will definitely be cross shopping the Volvo and the BMW and would rate the cars equally. Whichever ends up leasing better in the next few months will be my pick.

Btw even though it is not the same class of car, I also drove the 2019 Accord and that car has better steering (quick ratio, great weight, and decent feel) than both the BMW and Volvo. 2.0T with 10 speed transmission felt just as punchy. As expected the interior quality was definitely a step below the BMW and Volvo though…

The Honda is fwd too. Deal breaker for many

wouldnt the audi A4 be a better comparison is available in fwd or awd

Funny because the Audi A4 is also FWD but people seem to forget that because it’s an Audi. 95% of buyers can’t tell the difference in driving feel anyway

Because these AWDs drive as FWD 90% of the time.
