Chevy Bolt Premier NJ tax rebate?

, ,

Hi - I leased a Chevy Bolt - $2k DAS with $260 a month incl. taxes (10k / 36 months) // $43,765 total Premier model, effectively fully loaded. Included costco, lease in household, about 10% of MSRP. The car is registered in NJ (NJ resident).

The problem I am having now - is that I leased the car via a NY dealer vs in NJ. I want to claim the NJ credit (got the lease about 2 weeks ago so still qualify). I am reading the website that the DEALER needed to be in NJ.

Has anyone been able to submit with a NY dealership? Is there potentially a way around this? I feel very dumb if I left $5k of tax rebate on the table because of this technicality. Dealership is also not being helpful.

you are out of luck
Had to have been from a NJ dealer

Yup. This just cost you 5k. If you had leased a Premier with a NJ dealer before 12/15, you could have gotten it for 2-3k total…

Apparently the bill that was passed doesn’t actually include this requirement? If that’s the case, it’s up to you to decide whether it’s worth it to sue

At the very least, apply get denied and then appeal to the appropriate board citing the language of the legislation.

Pretty sure it was in the fine print that it had to be a new cad purchased at a NJ dealer

The bill that was signed into law never mentioned the dealership location requirement. That was added into the program once it was passed by the program administrators, the NJ Bureau of Public Utilities. I would say that a person who made this purchase in January or February of this year might have grounds to sue over it because that provision was not made public, even though the governor specifically said that that the program would be retroactive to the signing of the law, before all the rules were made clear. The issue you may face is that you completed your purchase at a time where the rules and regulations were made publicly available, so that would be a difficult argument to win.
