Car damaged in hit and run one day before lease return

Our Volvo was damaged in a hit and run while parked in the street today. Lease return is scheduled for tomorrow.

Damage seems to be mostly paint scrapes on bumper but there may be some light dents there as well.

No luck so far finding witnesses or camera footage. So if we make a claim it will be against our own policy.

Called Volvo finance and they said there’s no way to do another pre-return inspection before tomorrow but they will inspect likely sometime next week and invoice us.

What is the hive minds thoughts on making a claim now against our own insurance?

I’d check with a local paint and body shop. If they can buff the scratches out or fix any minor dents it will be infinitely cheaper than what the bank will charge you (in my experience). Check your wear and tear guidelines and post pics. Hopefully it’s just paint transfer.

Thanks. Challenge will be finding a shop that can fix it before tomorrow.

I would just return it and expect $500 charge.
Are you taking another Volvo?

My friend was charged $390 for these damages but they took another Volvo so they got $500 damage waiver i guess.

Thanks. Would definitely just return it if it was just $500.

All advice so far though is it will be much cheaper if we pay directly for repairs than if we left Volvo finance charge us. Even our dealer suggested getting it fixed before lease return.

FWIW, I returned my Volvo lease last week with this damage to my bumper. The pre-inspection marked it $68 repair for the bumper, and $34 for the molding above the tire. Haven’t received my final invoice yet so idk if those charges will stick or change.

Don’t file a claim for that.

Thanks. That’s a good data point. Wish this had happened before our pre-return inspection.

The wildcard is Volvo finance. If we were paying a shop directly I’d guess maybe $1,000 to $2,000 worst case. Totally agree not good to claim that amount.

But I worry that Volvo finance will decide to go whole hog and come back with some insane repair charge.

Are you taking another one?

No we leased another brand.

I would just return it. We have had 3 Volvos before and had a small curb rashes and was worry about that. $0 charge.

That’s definitely reassuring.

glad to see other volvo people chime in. I’d take their advice

In my return experience Volvo/BoA was very forgiving. Small dents and scuffs were unnoticed back in 2021. I was a bit worried about a sizable dent from a bike rack on the spoiler on my return this year, but they ignored it entirely. I would definitely wait for Volvo to send you an invoice.

Thanks. Seems like that’s the consensus here.
