In FL, they give it to you at the dmv. I dont know what NJ does
You surrender the plates because they belong to HFS. MVC issues new plates on the spot. So you could feasibly drive to MVC in the vehicle, remove the plates in the lot, go in, do the swap, and put new plates on before driving away.
I bought my lease car from Honda Financial Service. In process of transferring the title to my name. I got only the certificate of title from Honda. This was sent back in May 10th. In NJ , I saw the steps to transfer the vehicle - NJ MVC | Transferring Vehicle Ownership .
- In first line it says - Remove the plates and surrender them to a motor vehicle agency or full service agency, unless the plates are being transferred to another vehicle (plates can be transferred to another vehicle, but not to another owner).
Do I need to remove the license title during my appointment and surrender. Would I get a new one?
- The odometer reading now shows different than what is showed on Title doc like 200 miles difference. Is that of any concern. When filling up Vehicle registration form , should I mention what todayâs odometer reading or the odometer reading when purchased in May? Please assist.

as for the odometer, just leave it alone. It doesnât matter. I once asked about that and the woman said she wanted to know what it was when the title was signed by the seller, not what it is now.

In the back of title of Certificate, since I got this from Honda FS. Should I fill in anything in Sale Price / Sales tax paid Driver Lic? or just need to sign in the Buyer Sign placeholder?
Youâre not supposed to fill in anything on behalf of the seller.
The people at the MVC just enter the data into their computer and theyâll just use the paperwork from HFS. Companies like HFS donât employ people to fill out backs of titles when printing letters can be automated.

Just sign and print name. Nothing else. Then theyâll have you fill out a registration form when you get there.
