I have come across an issue with my 2024 BMW i7. It was a loaner with 13k miles on the odometer and I signed under January numbers on the last day of the month and I received the car a month later towards the end of February. I should note that the car was bought from an out of state dealership and so I never saw the car in person and I only was able to see the car through short 10 second videos.
The car is a loaner so I can accept it having wear and tear in some areas of the car. However, I recently took it to my local dealership for an issue and they found that the wires connecting the rear windshield to the antenna are broken.
They believe that the damage most likely occurred when the window tint was being applied to the rear. The car came with the windows tinted and I never have reapplied different tints or gone anywhere near the rear headliner to mess with those wires. In order to get it fixed, it is going to need a new rear windshield which is a $2,800 fix. Would the dealership be liable for paying the cost of replacing the windshield?
This isn’t a warranty issue, I don’t think. The car drives just fine but I am not sure what other functions are limited with the broken wires. I haven’t contacted the dealership that I bought the car from yet. I wanted to gauge the community’s opinion on this first before I reach out to them. Any insight would be appreciated, thanks.
I agree with but based on your commentary, if that fails I’d be inclined to wait and see if it even pops up at your lease-end inspection. My guess is it won’t unless the problem is really obvious.
(I recently had my Audi lease-end inspection – in my garage – and the guy didn’t care if I backed it out or not, or even turned on the ceiling light.)
Of course this is without knowing if there’s a safety issue, or if you’re experiencing some kind of intolerable symptom(s).
Yes I would bring it to the selling dealers attention and see what they say. Also, how do these broken wires effect the vehicle ? What exactly was the issue for which you had to take the car in for service ?
Completely unrelated to the rear windshield. I got into a little fender bender, unfortunately. The car was taken to the dealer to calibrate the ACC and doors. The technician was unable to clear the faults on the rear antenna because of those wires.
I mean I didn’t even notice it was broken until the technician told me. I wonder what other functions are limited with the broken wires other than the rear window heater not working.
Take a picture of the broken wires. I would bet this could be repaired, it’s just that BMW rather go the remove and replace route versus the fix it in place route.
