BMW i4 lease transfer on hold. Software update / recall. Anyone know more details?

If I look at this recall, it happens to cover their two most popular transferred vehicles a couple months before $7500 rebate goes away. Imagine that!

Over/under on this miraculously being pushed OTA to everyone starting 10/1? :upside_down_face:

That makes absolutely no sense. BMW does not pay the $7500. It comes from the Government and goes to the bank, not the dealer. In fact, BMW would be incentivized to fix it faster to help sell all those cars before 9/30/2025.

Why would you say that? If prospective i4/iX customers are taking over transfers instead of leasing fresh metal from BMW, then the BMW mothership isn’t collecting additional $7500 commercial EV credits from the government and loses that new customer to a transfer.

If you believe this is BMW’s thinking, why would they offer lease transfers at all since, according to your theory, transfers would just cannibalize new car sales?

BMW has offered lease transfers for a very long time, and COVID was the only thing that stopped them completely for a short while to the best of my knowledge. A targeted and model specific recall would be a great way to throttle vehicles with programs that have been put on the clock by the government. It’s a one-off type event with the expiration of the EV credits. It’s just a theory, but it’s a possible one.

Why do they need to test every car individually? Do they not know what they are doing enough to test on their own vehicles at HQ?

Still doesn’t explain the 4 hours needed to update and test.

03/2025.71 appears to be pushing OTA if you have 8.5 in your vehicle. It’s a touch bizarre to install compared to prior versions. The file needs to be uploaded to the car in park. Then requires you to drive around for some time, while it prepares the second half of the update. Once that’s done, you have to turn the car off completely and trigger the update to install, which takes about half an hour.

I’d encourage everyone to check, and install the update right away if you can. If they’re like Volvo, it could be yanked and require a dealership visit at any time. Hopefully this is the version that covers any recall issues. I can see why centers are quoting 4 hours since it requires the tech to drive around.

Of course, of the two cars, the one that I don’t need it done on gets the OTA.

I found one report of someone’s car bricking. This is how these things get pulled…
