BMW i4 lease transfer on hold. Software update / recall. Anyone know more details?

Lease transfer was in final review. BMWFS just emailed that the transfer is on hold. Called BMWFS and was told the hold is due to a recall.

Bmwusa.com/recall shows no recalls for my VIN.

Called the BMW Recall Hotline and they said there is no recall. They said there is a software update available that has to be done at the dealer.

Called dealer and they said they just got notice of the software update but haven’t received the required software. No eta given. They speculated that it might be the same software update they recently received for the i7 but that’s just speculation.

Do any of the BMW dealers/brokers on here have any additional info? Just trying to guesstimate how long the transfer will be delayed.

TIA.

Yup, there’s a recall on cars manufactured with a certain time period. It happened last week. Dealerships should be able to do the update though.

Do you know if they got the s/w update for the i4 specifically? Earlier today, dealer said they only got s/w update for the X5.

I had two loaners which got hit with it right as we were contracting, and they were able to fix them.

Do we have the bulletin with specific years/manufacturing dates? TIA.

Sorry, but I can’t give out that kind of information, even if the dealership gives it to me.

No problem. I’m sure it will get leaked on one of the BMW forums if it’s a fresh recall. I know 2024 models had some recalls for the beam, and then the airbag one was an error from BMW that wasn’t even a recall.

@WeakestLink call and ask if it’s related to Takata airbags. That was an apparently a false push message in the app, and it actually resulted in dealers calling several clients to come in. I would expect the assumption group to not be an expert in this and simply do what their computer tells them.

It’s just software. It has nothing to do with airbags, and the 2024s were manufactured after Takatas were deemed defective.

Interesting. Yes, that’s why it was a false push. Several were getting alerts in the myBMW app for Takata airbags on cars that don’t have Takata airbags. Imagine that!

FYI. The software became available on Friday (maybe Thursday?). I got my update on Saturday and will hopefully get final lease transfer approval from BMWFS on Monday.

Could it be done OTA, or did it require a trip to the dealer? It looks like 2025 i4 xDrives and 2025 iX were the only ones who dodged the recall.

Requires trip to dealer. 4 hours to complete the update.

When I scheduled over the phone, the advisor told me 4 hours so I went to drop off the car overnight. The advisor at check in told me 1 hour so I decided to wait. After an hour, he called me in the waiting room to tell me the tech said it would take 4 hours.

What is the name of the software version showing in your car/app now after the update? Thanks in advance!

I don’t see anything in the app that references a software version. And the car is parked in a garage pretty far away from my home. I can check it later this week when I ship the car.

4 hours to complete the update.

That’s so depressing that BMW seems to have learned nothing in this area since my 2014 i3. It also took 4 hours at a dealer to apply an update.

Cmon, BMW! It’s been 11 years. No excuse for this!

BMW has performed many updates OTA. I think this particular update impacted the drive controller (?) and had to be tested by a tech once the update was complete.

You will have to deal with it till it’s done

But
You can get bmwna involved if it’s a “unsafe” recall, they might pay for your monthly payments till it’s fixed. Worth a shot

I had to wait 2 weeks…it wasn’t great but it wasn’t horrible. Probably not worth the effort to get BMWNA involved.

Ohhh ok yeah not bad

Brake booster recall screwed over a lot of people with transfers.
