Are dealers not allowed to sell (or in our case lease) out of region?

So I was talking to a chevy dealer in MA and told him I’m located in NY (not where I’m currently a resident, but where I have an apartment and still technically licensed, which is something I have to fix).

As I’m on the east coast regularly, I figured it be pretty easy for me to get up to them and either ship the car cross country (their price was $2K lower than anything else I’ve seen on the west coast, so would be worth it to ship).

However, as soon as I told the I’m in NY, they said they could only to sell cars that will be registered in the new england area. Similar response when I called dealers near where I grew up in MD and they said, they aren’t allowed to sell/lease to cars out of their region. And again the same response when I asked a dealer in portland, OR (which I’d actually just get on a cheap one way flight for and then drive down to CA).

as multple dealers have told me this, I guess its real, but can someone explain it to me?

This is true in some areas and brands. Dealers have regional agreements. However some dealers don’t care to uphold this (their call) and others can sell Demo’s to get around this stipulation as Demo’s may be considered used cars in some cases.

Is their any public record of what the regions are for chevy/gm?

I experienced what the OP refers to as a WA resident in California.
