Am I ripped off?! Dealer asking for sales tax 1 month after signing off lease

Dealerships do actually care about customer satisfaction. That survey you get from the manufacturer actually means a lot to them. A decent chunk of any payout to the dealership is actually based on those surveys. If they were to purposely engage in this kind of activity you’d likely see them get in legal trouble. One thing is if it’s a legitimate mistake, another is if it’s done intentionally.

Funny dealership story:

Bought a brand new 2020 Jeep Cherokee in January of this year. About 2 weeks after I bought the vehicle some lady sideswiped my car. I take the car to the shop to get fixed and file an insurance claim with the other drivers insurance. While the vehicle is being repaired I get a call from the dealership I bought the vehicle from. I call them back about a week later after my vehicle is repaired and the dealership tells me they gave me the wrong vehicle. LOL! There were 2 identical vehicles next to each other and the salesman (he was new) gave me the wrong vehicle. Since the deal had funded with the VIN of the other vehicle they asked me to bring the vehicle back and exchange it. Of course I said “sure”…I mean why wouldn’t I? Now this vehicle has an accident on it’s Carfax and the new one won’t.

About 3 days after I exchanged the vehicle the dealership calls me again and asks me why I didn’t tell them about the accident. I told them because they didn’t ask. Not my problem. Have a nice day.

Not sure how it works to sell a brand new vehicle that’s been in an accident but…they’re eating up the loss because it was their mistake. Sorry.

That’s pretty unethical although I am not sure what dealers recourse would have been even if you told them. The only option would have been getting you to redo paperwork in order to sell you the other right car and I wonder if that would even have been sufficient.

When I got my Volvo I knew what all the numbers should look like and had my Penfed code ready to go. Dealership folks definitely acted like I was a unicorn customer. Manager said I was the first person she has ever seen have Penfed code ready when they arrive at dealership.

Honestly, you clearly can’t “keep” the car and forget about the $1750. If they refuse to eat the $1750, I’d tell them come and pick it up, or I’d drop it off much faster since you can find a better deal.

In my state a dealer only has to disclose the damage to a buyer if the damage exceeds 5% of the sticker price. It didn’t. The dealership is 1 hour away from me so I wasted a good chunk of time going up there. It was their mistake, not mine. Sorry.

This is like asking people to read the EULA before installing software. Not happening.

Ahahah I can’t wait to see you get roasted by the “righteous” LH members, supporters and admin.

Dealers are white collar unethical as is so I honestly don’t care that you were unethical. Either way they needed that car back with or without an accident. If they didn’t need it back, they could’ve fixed the contract to the new VIN.

Also, not every driver knows that they need to report an accident to the dealership under any circumstance. Maybe if the dealer gives me a higher trim and ask for it back, I’ll claim it was in an accident to get to keep it.

We all have horror stories of how dealers have unethically sold cars and were perfectly protected by law. A damaged car with repairs is good as new to the owner, so it’s their loss. When customers lose, they have to pay for their mistakes over the course of a few years. A dealer will get it over faster!
