$3,000 Negative Equity on 08 Acura TL

So this morning my check engine light came on and I got this message on the screen. How ironic the day after CarMax offers me $7k. The plot thickens.

Acura TL P0301: Misfire Detected – Cylinder 1

Thats a coil, not an expensive part (maybe $30) and if front facing can be change easily like a sparkplug. You might also be able to get the CEL light reset (google it) or sometimes an autoparts store can reset it.

That’s likely nothing. Test the coil and pull the plug and check condition.

I’m taking it to a family mechanic to see. I think you guys are right. Probably something minor. So how should I go about in finding deals at year end??

Man you sound like you are just tired of your car and want to be done with it lol. A lot of us have told you that the vehicle you have is a pretty good vehicle and the issues you are having are minor. I know how the mind thinks when someone wants to get into a new car and this includes myself lol. We look at every minor issue and add it to the bucket of reasons to get rid of the existing car.
Nothing wrong with that though. If you really want to get into a Benz or Bmw in $300s, the ideal situation would be to wait till Feb. Sell your TL to private party as that is the best time to sell (tax season, refunds coming in etc) And also at that time by Feb n March, lease support will be ending on the probably the 3 series and C. Not guaranteed but that is what the trend has been over the years.
If you can ride it out till then, good for you. Selling your car between now and December wont get u good money in private as holiday shopping will be the first thing on everyone’s mind.

Great Point. I have a buyer looking at it next week. I got a quote on a 2020 Toyota Corolla SE sedan. 500 down, 300 a month with 1900 negative equity. I’m still contemplating on fixing the car and keeping it.

Hey just for one small data point our 03 TL is on its 3rd owner (all family). At 16 yrs old and 120k miles it needs on average 500-1000k of work per year. Much much cheaper than $300 per month on a corolla (which is also great car but not a TL). The 08 TL really is a sweet ride, hell I used to track another TL (in the slow lane and with lots of brake fade) just for shits and giggles. They’re pretty rock solid cars.

I have a family members young son driving an 04 with 279k (original tran. and engine) to the clock and engine still purrs. Apart from the cracked dash and the blown HFL (blue tooth), cars only needed suspension parts and a starter motor

Even with the negative rolled in, that’s a lot of money for a freaking Toyota Corolla

Corolla SE @ 24k +$1900 negative equity. It is a lot of money. What other options are there to lease? Also considering a Jetta R Line

I had an 03 Accord V6 6MT (Same platform) up to 245k miles. Car was infinitely reliable, even got $4500 for it with those miles. I had done a lot of work to it but it was crazy anal retentive stuff that didn’t actually need to be done :man_shrugging:

How is waiting 4 months of $235 payments going to help $3k negative equity?

I’m glad to hear such great stories on these cars unfortunately not my case. My mechanic told me to dump it because the tenant is looking good. Going to have to take a loss and move on from it.

I also think the tenant of the car is the issue

Lmao. I wish I was at fault. I service it at Acura car just doesn’t like me. Lol

Wait, is your mechanic a dealer technician or local ???

In one of his earlier posts, he said he’s been taking it to the dealer.

Still not sure what “tenant is looking good” means in this context though.

Oh Lord. Thats the problem right there. OP is probably getting quotes in multiples of what locals would charge.

means OP wants out of the TL no matter what

Means the tenant next door looks good and to improve his chances with her, he will have to start driving a BMW for sure…

I would also dump my POS acura and get a new BMS if my next door tenant looked good too…
