Good afternoon. Long time reader, first time poster. I am trying to work a deal with a ford dealer and I am trying to get the best possible deal. I have a jeep trade in with some negative equity. Please let me know your thoughts on this lease. I was trying to put very little down and wanted a payment closer to $650. My current payment on my jeep is $550. Located in TX.

Jeep lease buyout is $42k

Separate your trade from this lease and see if $35k is the most anyone will buy it for

It looks like the dealer is offering tax credits?

Did you verify the residual and MF? Calculator link?

Consider doing a broader search for 2023 GT’s and demo ‘23 GTs. Haven’t looked out in TX area but there can be amazing rebates and also discounts to help bring down the price

There was only one ‘23 available. Dealer refused to work a deal, acting if it was the last GT on earth.

I was able to get the dealer to work it a bit better but still feel it’s high considering my negative. Highest range is received by putting the vin in multiple searches was $36.5k which is about $1,500 more than what the dealer is quoting.

What does MF do and how does it calculate?

Given that they are giving almost $14k off the vehicle isn’t bad. This is also all being done virtually. Wonder if I have a shot at getting a bit more walking in and showing them how serious I am.

MF is the money factor. Ford uses the more typical interest rate. You’d have to ask to make sure they aren’t marking it up to increase their margin.

Depends on how hard you want to work for this deal. 2023’s can be found if you are willing to go outside of your local area. The ‘23s have better interest rates with largely similar residuals. You can go on a larger aggregator site or fords inventory locator to sift through what is available.

Looks like MF is 2.9%. Have over 800 score. Doesn’t look like dealer is doing anything shady. I’m just surprised on the payment. When I leased my jeep grand Cherokee 4xe I put $2k down and my monthly payment is $560. This was also January of ‘23 on a ‘22 model.

Granted in this situation. I’m upside down by $6k. Ford dealer is doing $13k in discounts/incentives.

Not sure if I should just ride out my current lease to the end. I drive 200 miles to and from work per week. so including fuel, and the car payment I’m roughly at $620-$640. Have 19 payments remaining. Given interest rates may start cutting this month.

Mach E’s do not lease well in comparison to a lot of other EVs and as such are not covered as well on this site compared to the Hyundai/Kia/Chevy cars. 6k in negative equity will add a significant amount to any lease.

Out of curiosity, How does one find a dealer that has these tax credits? Do they normally advertise when they have them available?

If there are any tax-credits applied – there ain’t much. The OP is only required to pay taxes on either $11K (trade-difference) or on $4300 (net difference).

No one usually advertises Tax-credits – its something the dealers apply on case-by-case basis (or in some manufacturer cases: such a GM, and/or Lexus., one-pay could help bring-in/apply sales-tax credits …)

It’s not necessarily dealer specific. The sales tax credits come from the lender. There is rarely any kind of advertisement by the dealer or manufacturer that sales tax credits are available. You just have to ask. Typically, the dealer will disclose them in the deal sheet. So, if the sales tax number is 0 or a fairly low number then there must have been sales tax credits available. This is a brief description of how it works.

In TX you pay sales tax on the total sales price of the vehicle, regardless of any trade (unless you’re trading a lease to a lease with the same captive).

Sales tax credits in TX are really not up to the dealer. The lender first has to be offering those sales tax credits. The lender can also specify which vehicles are eligible. For example, BMW has been offering sales tax credits on EVs only for quite a while. No sales tax credits have been available on gas powered BMWs for a good while. That goes for all lenders, they can pick and choose which vehicles within the product portfolio gets sales tax credits and when. Also, as you said, they can choose to only give them on one pay leases and not traditional leases.

But at the end of the day, the lender has to be offering the sales tax credit in order for the dealer to offer it. It’s not up to the dealer to decide when they are available.

Ah - thanks for clarity on trade-in and “captive” to same “captive” lenders lease-to-lease scenario.

Curious- how come some dealers be able to buy/purchase tax-credits – is that how, the low 1.25% they charge – is that used to buy the tax-credits from captive-lender ? (if not for credits, in TX type states, the state sales-tax of 6.25% is applicable on purchase-price on the leased vehicle). Worse yet, if/when you do lease-end buy - you pay sales tax-again, on your RV/then-purchase-price 😟

A few years ago I traded in a leased BMW on another BMW lease. In that situation I only paid sales tax on the difference in price between the 2 cars since they were both leased via BMW Financial.

On the sales tax credits. I think you’re still missing how they work/availablity. Dealers do not “purchase” them from the lender/captive. The lender/captive offers them to anyone who leases a vehicle that they are offering them on. It’s another form of incentive from the lender to help move metal. Hence why the lender/captive does not always offer them accross the board on every vehicle by the manufacturer. Example, BMW Financial may choose to give sales tax credits on the 5 series and 7 series only. That’s part of why you don’t often see sales tax credits on vehicles that sell well. It’s an incentive to help move inventory. Hence, the lender/captive offers them on slower selling vehicles TYPICALLY.

Also, some lenders/captives offer full sales tax credits, some partial. Example, my '23 Infiniti QX80 had full sales tax credits. I paid no sales tax on that lease. My '20 BMW X5 had partial sales tax credits. BMW Financial makes you pay either 1.25% or 1.5% sales tax. I forgot what it was exactly.

You are correct with being taxed twice if you buy out your leased vehicle. You will pay sales tax when you first get your vehicle then you will pay sales tax again when you buy the leased vehicle from the lender. The only way you avoid this is if you had sales tax credits on the vehicle when leased new. In that scenario you are only paying sales tax on the buy out price.

There are some programs that get around this, such as BMW Owner’s Choice.
