The last thing you want to do right now is try to buy a used car. Prices are through the roof.
In this case, I need car and am trying to determine the best investment of my money for a small compact / subcompact SUV.
What about this?. I would lease it and sell it when used car market will come back to normal.

Great idea - I am going to test drive the Kona and Tuscon.
Also inquiring with VW on potential lease deals for a Taos.
I wouldn’t hold my breath on a brand new model leasing well right now.

Then work out pricing based on the current programs yourself. Talking numbers with a dealer is for finding someone to do your deal, not for finding out what something should lease for.
