I was just looking at used Genesis prices – more specifically the 2016 Hyundai Genesis. 20,000 mile examples could be had for $25,000… This is for the purchase! I don’t think much has changed since the 2016 model, has it?
Let me say that nobody knows less than me about year-over-year Gen(Hyundai)esis updates!
Probably some exterior updates, definitely a lot of interior updates and some new technology, although the 2016 tech is probably just great. If you are interested in one for the lowest price, getting a few-year old used one would be an excellent choice.
Note that 2017 was the first year for the G80 and G90. We’ve been eyeing them since then and have just decided to give the G80 a try, but we want the latest model. With a lease, it’s a 3 year commitment and that’s not terribly long to be stuck if it’s less than awesome. But reading through all the reviews leads me to believe it’s not a bad bet. May not be the greatest lease deal ever, so we’ll try to get that down a bit.
Here’s a good article that describes the model history and a few other interesting points:

I leased a 2015 Genesis (base w/ an MSRP of 38k) for $300/mo including tax, with $700 in drive-offs. That is an exceptional deal; unfortunately, I doubt that the price can be replicated today… I absolutely loved the car, and can’t wait to check out the G70 when they hit the dealerships.
I liked my Genesis a lot more than the Mercedes C300 I’m leasing currently. I had all the features I needed in my car, including Carplay and Android Auto!
It also doesn’t seem to have changed much in the last 4 years. Looking at Genesis’s website, the base model now seems to have a new gear shifter and include all of the safety features… But that’s about it… The Signature package of the Hyundai used to include it as well.
It might be worth a look? Could end up a lot cheaper for essentially the same car…
I believe the twin turbo V6 engine (shared with the kia stinger) is new as of 2018. That’s a big difference especially if you slap a JB4 tuner on there.
I think you’re right about the engine. The Kia Stinger is apparently a sleeper vehicle, with exceptionally great reviews and owner feedback. The V6 on the G80 was new for last year and has incredible power.
I think the best deal for both price and value would be on a 2018 model (G80), since there were few changes between 2018 and 2019. If looking for just raw low price, then certainly the 2016/17 models are probably excellent cars for very low price.
If you can afford the deal, that is ultimately the name of the game. You can play the bargain game until you are exhausted. Your residual was better than mine when I leased a 3.8T last September. I think time of year helps on discounts and I’d recommend seeking out a cherry demo (350mi) which I did. Out the door for 550 per month 12k/year… nothing out of pocket. The dealer made an error on the sales tax for my county of residence and that ended up putting me at 570. The whole bargain came through finding their advertised selling price and making them stick to it. I knew it was a deal before I set foot on a dealership floor. I recommend CarGurus.com
One thing I will add, however, is that all these German cultists have no clue what a fully loaded Genesis is. Indeed it may lease poorly, but it is every bit as much a luxury car. My turbo is best thing I’ve ever been in for the money. Didn’t have to mess with option packages.
Free maintenance? C’mon! Lexus ES and GS don’t even compare to me and Lexus infotainment has been an rage-inducing mess for years. Genesis is simple— touch screen and rotary knob.
And to the person who talked about the base model genesis? Any genesis is a good car, but until you’re fully loaded it’s not even close. Leather goes down a grade on base, nav screen size and many other luxury items.
Thank you very much for your reply! We are loving the car so far and are happy with the deal, even if ultimately it wasn’t the greatest. And honestly, I still don’t quite understand if it was or wasn’t! Our first time leasing and there are just too many hidden factors.
I do completely agree that anybody unfamiliar with Genesis doesn’t understand what buyers are getting for the price. Incredible amount of features, without having to spend hours studying option packages, plus full warranty and free maintenance AND valet service for at least the 3 year life of the lease. With the closest dealer being 45 min away from us, the valet service alone is valuable.
The ease of use for the infotainment is a dream! Those who don’t know Genesis should check them out. Thanks again for your comments and I’m glad you love yours!
Biggest complaints about genesis aren’t about their value proposition rather the poor corporate and service experience. Not everyone is able to get the concierge service and making a warranty claim with Hyundai is like pulling teeth.
Genesis is great, I agree… I had a Stinger GT.
Just for perspective, I leased a '15 Hyundai Genesis RWD Ultimate (same car as the G80) in February 2016 for $334/mo. w/ $3k down.
I don’t think we’ll see deals like that again, but I suggest waiting 6 - 12 months and then see what kind of deal you can get on a '19.
I would suggest looking for a leftover '18, but they’re scarcer than a virgin in a house of ill repute.
